๐Ÿ’ฐ Chemical peel cost guide 2026 โ†’

Chemical peels apply a chemical solution to the skin to exfoliate and stimulate regeneration. Peels are classified as superficial, medium-depth or deep, depending on the agent and concentration used. Performed by trained practitioners and regulated under the relevant TGA and state health-services rules.

Editorial guide

What is chemical peel?

Chemical peels apply controlled chemical injury to the skin to remove damaged outer layers and stimulate regeneration. The depth of injury is matched to the indication: superficial peels for textural refinement and mild discolouration, medium peels for moderate sun damage and fine lines, deep peels for significant photoageing and deep perioral lines. Peeling is one of the oldest cosmetic dermatology procedures and has a robust evidence base when performed appropriately.

How chemical peel works

Skin is cleansed and degreased. The peel solution is applied with a brush, gauze or cotton-tip in measured layers until the desired endpoint is reached (frosting for medium and deep peels). Some peels are neutralised with water; others are 'self-neutralising'. Patients leave with specific aftercare instructions covering moisturiser, sunscreen, and avoidance of active ingredients for several days to weeks.

Who is chemical peel for?

Adults with sun damage, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne, melasma, or general skin-quality concerns. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should generally defer most peels. Patients on isotretinoin should usually wait at least 6 months after stopping. Patients with active skin infection, untreated melanoma in the area, or unrealistic expectations are not candidates.

What drives the cost

Superficial peel: $150โ€“$300 per session. Medium peel: $500โ€“$1,000. Deep peel (phenol-based): $1,500โ€“$5,000+ and may require sedation or anaesthesia for comfort. A series of superficial peels: $700โ€“$1,500 typically.

Recovery and downtime

Superficial peels: redness 1โ€“3 days, mild flaking. Medium peels: crusting and visible peeling 5โ€“10 days. Deep peels: 2โ€“3 weeks of significant downtime, ongoing redness for several months, strict sun avoidance for 6+ months.

Choosing a practitioner

Match the depth of peel to the practitioner's training. For superficial peels, trained dermal therapists and nurses are generally appropriate. For medium and deep peels, prefer a Specialist Dermatologist or Specialist Plastic Surgeon. Ask about pre-treatment priming protocol โ€” good results often depend on weeks of preparation before the peel itself.

Risk profile for chemical peel

How the most-discussed risks for chemical peel sit on a frequency-by-severity grid. All cosmetic procedures carry risk; the goal of this view is to help you ask better consent questions, not to dismiss any single complication as unlikely.

Frequency \\ Severity MildModerateSerious
Common
  • Erythema (redness) for hours to days
  • Persistent redness
โ€” โ€”
Uncommon โ€”
  • Crusting and flaking, especially with medium and deep peels
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in skin types IVโ€“VI
  • Hypopigmentation (lightening) โ€” risk increases with depth
  • Scarring (rare with superficial peels, real risk with deep peels)
  • Inadequate result for the depth chosen
โ€”
Rare โ€” โ€”
  • Infection (rare but possible, including herpes reactivation)

Frequency and severity classifications are editorial summaries based on Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons consent literature and TGA / AHPRA guidance. Your surgeon should explain each risk individually as part of the formal informed-consent process โ€” this matrix is a starting point for the conversation, not a substitute.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the difference between superficial, medium and deep peels?

Superficial peels (alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid, salicylic acid) treat the epidermis only. Recovery: 1โ€“3 days redness and mild flaking. Medium peels (TCA 20โ€“35%) reach the upper dermis. Recovery: 5โ€“10 days of crusting and visible peeling. Deep peels (phenol, croton-oil) reach the mid dermis. Recovery: 2โ€“3 weeks of significant downtime, ongoing redness for months. Deep peels produce the most dramatic results but carry the highest risk and require an experienced practitioner.

What can a chemical peel realistically achieve?

Superficial peels improve skin texture, mild discolouration and oiliness. Medium peels treat moderate sun damage, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Deep peels can substantially improve sun damage, deep lines around the mouth, and pre-cancerous changes. They cannot tighten significant skin laxity or reposition fat โ€” those require surgical or energy-based interventions.

Are peels safe for darker skin?

Superficial peels formulated for darker skin (mandelic acid, lactic acid, salicylic) are generally safe with appropriate priming. Medium and deep peels carry a meaningful risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in skin types IVโ€“VI and require an experienced practitioner who has done many such treatments. The pre-treatment regimen and post-care matter as much as the peel itself.

How many sessions?

Superficial peels are typically performed in a series of 3โ€“6 sessions every 2โ€“4 weeks for cumulative benefit. Medium peels are usually a single session, sometimes repeated 6โ€“12 months later. Deep peels are once-in-a-lifetime for most patients.

Who should perform a chemical peel?

Superficial peels can be safely performed by trained dermal therapists, registered nurses and aestheticians. Medium and deep peels should be performed by a doctor (usually a Specialist Dermatologist or Specialist Plastic Surgeon) given the higher risk profile. Always confirm AHPRA registration where applicable.
