Cosmetic surgery costs β€” common questions

How much does cosmetic surgery cost in Australia?

It depends entirely on the procedure. Non-surgical treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections typically run $200–$800 per session, while major surgery such as a tummy tuck commonly ranges from $15,000 to $30,000 including surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees. This estimator shows indicative national and city-level ranges from our directory data.

Why do prices vary so much between clinics?

The biggest drivers are who performs the work (a specialist plastic surgeon versus a cosmetic physician), the facility (accredited hospital versus day procedure suite), anaesthesia type, and city. Sydney and Melbourne sit at the top of most ranges; regional cities often run 10–25% lower.

Are quotes from clinics all-inclusive?

Not always. A trustworthy quote itemises the surgeon's fee, anaesthetist's fee, hospital or facility fee, implants or devices, garments, and follow-up care. Always ask for the total out-of-pocket figure in writing before committing.

Does Medicare or private health insurance cover any of it?

Purely cosmetic procedures are not covered. Procedures with a genuine medical indication β€” such as breast reduction for chronic pain, blepharoplasty affecting vision, or abdominoplasty after massive weight loss meeting strict criteria β€” may attract a Medicare item number and partial private health rebates. Your surgeon and insurer can confirm eligibility.

Is a cheaper quote a red flag?

Sometimes. Quotes dramatically below the typical range can indicate a non-specialist operator, an unaccredited facility, or excluded fees that surface later. Compare like-for-like itemised quotes from at least two AHPRA-registered practitioners.
