What a quote should itemise

  1. Surgeon's fee โ€” the largest component, and the one that reflects credentials. A FRACS specialist plastic surgeon charges more than a cosmetic physician, and revision work more than primary.
  2. Anaesthetist's fee โ€” billed by time. A six-hour combined case can double the anaesthetic cost of a two-hour one.
  3. Facility fee โ€” accredited private hospital theatre and bed costs versus a day-procedure suite. Overnight stays add materially.
  4. Devices and implants โ€” breast implants, mesh, threads or graft materials, at cost or with a margin.
  5. Aftercare โ€” garments, follow-up appointments, scar management and โ€” critically โ€” what happens financially if you need a revision.

Medicare & private health insurance

Medicare never covers surgery done purely for appearance. It can contribute when there is documented functional need:

  • Breast reduction โ€” chronic pain criteria (item 45523)
  • Abdominoplasty / lipectomy โ€” after massive weight loss, with skin complications
  • Blepharoplasty โ€” when excess skin obstructs vision (visual field test)
  • Septorhinoplasty โ€” breathing obstruction or post-traumatic deformity

Qualifying for a Medicare item number usually unlocks private health hospital cover too. Ask your surgeon's rooms to check eligibility in writing before assuming.

Red flags when comparing prices

  • A single round number with no itemisation of surgeon, anaesthetist and facility.
  • A quote far below the range on this page โ€” something is excluded, or someone is underqualified.
  • Pressure deposits, "today only" discounts, or financing pushed before you have met the surgeon.
  • No named surgeon at quote stage, or a "consultant" who is a salesperson rather than a clinician.
  • No written policy on revisions and complications.

Every clinic listed on this site appears under AHPRA registration data, and enquiries go directly to the clinic โ€” never to a broker. Find clinics near you โ†’

Cost questions, answered

How much does cosmetic surgery cost in Australia in 2026?

Anywhere from $100 for laser hair removal sessions to $50,000 for a full mummy makeover. Non-surgical treatments sit between $100 and $5,000 per session; single-site surgery between $4,000 and $25,000; combined or complex surgery between $25,000 and $50,000. The full table on this page covers 46 procedures with national ranges and typical recovery.

What is included in a cosmetic surgery quote?

A complete quote has five parts: the surgeon's fee, the anaesthetist's fee, hospital or day-surgery facility fees, any devices or implants, and post-operative care including garments and follow-up visits. If a quote is a single round number, ask for the itemisation โ€” hidden exclusions are how $8,000 quotes become $14,000 invoices.

Does Medicare or private health insurance pay for any of it?

Only when there is a documented medical need. The common qualifying procedures are breast reduction (item 45523), abdominoplasty after massive weight loss, upper blepharoplasty obstructing vision, functional rhinoplasty/septoplasty, and gynaecomastia in specific cases. Purely cosmetic surgery is never covered.

Why are Sydney and Melbourne more expensive?

Facility costs, surgeon demand and overheads. Directory data shows identical procedures priced 15โ€“30% lower in regional cities such as Townsville, Cairns, Hobart and Geelong. If you travel for surgery, keep a local practitioner in the loop for aftercare and possible complications.

Is medical tourism to Thailand or Bali worth it?

Headline prices are lower, but AHPRA-registered aftercare does not exist offshore, revision surgery back in Australia costs more than primary surgery, and Australian travel insurers increasingly exclude elective-surgery complications. If you go, use a JCI-accredited hospital and budget for contingencies.

How do I avoid overpaying?

Get two or three itemised written quotes from AHPRA-registered practitioners for the identical procedure, compare the totals (not deposits), and check what aftercare and revision cover is included. Price differences of 20% between comparable specialists are normal; differences of 60% mean something is missing.

All figures are indicative national and city-level ranges from this directory's editorial research, updated October 2026. They are general information only โ€” not medical advice, and not a quote. Every patient and every clinic is different: always confirm an itemised written quote with an AHPRA-registered practitioner before proceeding.
