BMI and cosmetic surgery โ common questions
What BMI do I need for cosmetic surgery in Australia?
Many Australian cosmetic surgeons prefer a BMI under 30 for elective procedures, and some will operate up to a BMI of 35 with additional precautions. A BMI over 35โ40 usually means surgery is deferred until weight is reduced, because anaesthetic and healing risks rise sharply. Each clinic sets its own policy, so confirm at consultation.
Is BMI the only health measure clinics use?
No. BMI is a quick screening tool only. Clinics also consider waist circumference, smoking status, blood pressure, diabetes, medications and your goals. Two people with the same BMI can have very different surgical risk profiles.
Does my BMI affect the cost of surgery?
It can. Higher BMIs can mean longer operating time, different anaesthetic planning and occasionally hospital rather than day-surgery settings, all of which add cost. Some surgeons also charge more for revision or complex cases.
How accurate is BMI for muscular or athletic people?
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular people can register as "overweight" with low body fat. If that sounds like you, treat the number as a conversation starter with your GP or surgeon rather than a verdict.
Can I use this calculator for teenagers?
No โ this calculator uses the adult BMI formula. People under 18 need age- and sex-adjusted percentile charts; see a GP or paediatrician instead.
